It is the first time in 33 years that one of the thirteen surviving copies of the historic document has been up on the auction block. The copy was previously owned by New York philanthropist Dorothy Tapper Goldman.<\/p>\n<p>The idea to pool Ethereum (ETH) from thousands of crypto investors in order to make a group bid on a historic artifact was an instant hit.<\/p>\n<p>After five days, the DAO had collected more than $4 million. One week on, and the crypto clan had pooled over $47 million worth of Ethereum, ahead of the auction. Everyone who buys in, they get a portion of the governance token of the DAO, and they can then use that token to vote on where the Constitution should actually be custodied.<\/p>\n<p>There are 13 surviving copies of the original print of the U.S. Constitution. While the ConstitutionDAO coffers swelled with Ethereum, organizers were performing logistical acrobatics to find a legal path to make a legit bid.<\/p>\n<p>DAOs don\u2019t rely on banks to store their cash but are instead governed by smart contracts. These contracts are self-executing agreements that live on the blockchain, which is the name for the digital ledger that underpins cryptocurrencies. DAOs also lack a central governing authority and are led by decisions determined by votes made by its collective membership. The organizational structure runs contrary to many of the eligible bidder stipulations detailed by Sotheby\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1oMbg2d_7QmhO7QtoLmIeqg9HCdNfZgoC_w7oi7RMD7Q\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the group\u2019s FAQ<\/a>, Sotheby\u2019s does not allow DAOs to bid directly, nor did the auction house accept anything other than government-issued currencies for this lot, although it accepted the cryptocurrency<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/press\/sothebys-to-announce-live-bidding-increments-in-ether-eth-cryptocurrency-for-banksys-trolley-hunters-and-love-is-in-the-air\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethereum (ETH) for the first time ever<\/a>\u00a0for two works by renowned street artist Banksy earlier in the evening. Know-your-customer compliance is also required, which is hard for a collective comprised of thousands of investors.<\/p>\n<p>To meet the criteria, ConstitutionDAO teamed up with a crypto exchange to convert its Ethereum to dollars, as well as a non-profit that made bids on the DAO\u2019s behalf. The group also formed a corporation to help facilitate the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, as of the 19th of November the group, ConstitutionDAO, said in an update on Discord that they did not win the auction at Sotheby\u2019s, which sold for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sothebys\/status\/1461497347377086467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a total of $43.2 million<\/a>. The DAO\u2019s organizers believed they would not have enough money to \u201cinsure, store, and transport the document\u201d if they had made a higher bid.<\/p>\n<p>Following this another statement was issued on their website, leaving it up to the collective to decide what happens next.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cConstitutionDAO (2021-2021) was a beautiful experiment in a single-purpose DAO.<\/strong>\u00a0We now believe this project has run its course.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The community has taken all actions that it was organized to accomplish: we raised capital, we bid at Sotheby\u2019s, and upon losing, we made full refunds available to the community as promised.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Having lost the auction and following the core team&#8217;s choice to wind down, we would like to remind you that the tokens possess no rights, governance, or utility other than redeeming them for Ethereum from the smart contract held in Juicebox at a ratio of 1,000,000:1\u2014the same ratio at which contributions were made to the initial crowdfund to buy the Constitution.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is also an option to keep your $PEOPLE tokens and do with them as you please\u2014it is clear that there are parts of the community who wish to incorporate them into future rojects.\u00a0<strong>ConstitutionDAO cannot and will not endorse any future plans for the token.
