La finance décentralisée, ou DeFi, utilise des applications blockchain pour fournir des services tels que l'échange de tokens, le lending, l'emprunt et l'apport de liquidité. Un portefeuille interagit avec des smart contracts qui détiennent des actifs et appliquent les règles du protocole. L'accès peut être ouvert, bien que les sites web, les émetteurs d'actifs et certains produits puissent imposer des restrictions. La DeFi désigne le service, non une garantie que chacune de ses composantes est décentralisée.
Les tokens peuvent représenter un droit de vote, un dépôt, une position de dette ou une créance sur un pool d'actifs. Ces rôles ne sont pas interchangeables. Un token de gouvernance peut ne conférer aucun droit aux revenus du protocole, tandis qu'un token de pool de liquidité expose son détenteur aux actifs et à la valorisation de ce pool. Les rendements peuvent provenir des intérêts des emprunteurs, des frais de trading ou d'incitations sous forme d'émissions ; des récompenses inhabituellement élevées appellent une explication claire. Les défaillances de smart contracts, les erreurs d'oracle de prix, les liquidations et les dépendances vis-à-vis des bridges peuvent toutes affecter une position.
