Understanding the Bitcoin ecosystem

Browse the buying guides

Bitcoin is a base blockchain that records transfers of its native asset, BTC. Bitcoin ecosystem projects can add services around it, including wallets, infrastructure and systems for representing other assets. Such a connection does not make another token equivalent to BTC or give it the same security assumptions.

How it works

Some products hold bitcoin through a custodian or represent it on another chain. Others use separate protocols with their own rules. Understand where the asset actually lives, who controls any backing and how redemption works. A familiar Bitcoin-themed name is not proof of a direct on-chain relationship.
