What belongs in the NFT category?

A non-fungible token identifies a distinct asset or record rather than an interchangeable unit of currency. NFTs can represent collectibles, game items, memberships or other rights defined by the issuer. This buying-guide category also includes fungible tokens used by NFT marketplaces and infrastructure. Buying a marketplace token does not give ownership of the NFTs traded there.

How it works

The blockchain records the token, but associated media, licenses and services may live elsewhere. Ownership of an NFT does not automatically transfer copyright or guarantee permanent access to its content. For ecosystem tokens, examine the role in fees, incentives or governance. For individual NFTs, collection authenticity, metadata storage and the depth of actual bids matter. A displayed floor price is an asking price and may not be achievable when selling.
