What Is BarnBridge (BOND)?

BarnBridge is a risk tokenization protocol. Its applications allow users to hedge factors such as yield sensitivity or asset price volatility by tokenizing various levels of risk exposure to a given underlying liquidity pool. These tokenized positions, referred to as either senior or junior tranches, are then as liquid as any other ERC-721 or ERC-20 token, respectively.

Barnbridge is the first cross-platform derivatives protocol for any and all fluctuations. The network enables investors to hedge against yield sensitivity and market price using different pools. The system reduces the risk of digital assets and digital asset yield sensitivity in multiple ways. Specifically, it breaks these assets into smaller, separate, dollar-denominated portions called tranches. The network then creates derivatives based on these tranches.

Although first designed in Q2 of 2019, BarnBridge was officially introduced in September 2020 upon the close of its seed funding round. BarnBridge aims to facilitate the transition of traditional financial institutions to decentralized finance with smart contract solutions for risk management.

BarnBridge does not exist as a legally incorporated entity – it is solely organized around an Ethereum-based cooperative (i.e. “DAO”) that is coordinated via the BOND governance token. BOND holders have the ability to participate in protocol governance, determining outcomes for future smart contract deployments, the further distribution of BOND tokens, and the use for fee revenue earned by associated applications.

BarnBridge launched its first application, SMART Yield, on March 15th 2021. SMART Yield allows users to enter debt pools on existing lending markets like Compound or AAVE and receive either a fixed return or a levered variable rate return. Its next two applications, SMART Exposure and SMART Alpha, provide similar functionality but for portfolio concentration risk and asset price volatility.

How Does BarnBridge (BOND) Work?

Barnbridge introduces a selection of new and proprietary systems to accomplish its goals. The network uses pooled collateral that is then deposited into lending protocols or yield generating contracts. The network then bundles and separates the yield into different tranches.

BarnBridge Oracles

Oracles play a vital role in the Barnbridge system. These off-chain sensors are used to determine the price of the staked assets. Specifically, oracles monitor the price of the assets when the pool period starts and when the period ends. This structure better ensures a fair distribution of earnings or losses.

BarnBridge Smart Bonds

Smart Bonds are another critical component of the Barnbridge system. Smart bonds are able to access debt pools on other decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. They enable the system to then create multiple assets within a single debt pool with varying risk/return characteristics.

Investors can evaluate these tokenizing yields and debt derivatives to see what best fits into their investment strategy. Users may stake BOND tokens in different tranches of various risks. Notably, these tranches leverage the DAO to decide what pools are next to be deployed on the network.

BarnBridge SMART Yield

Smart Yield Crypto Bonds provide investors with another way to secure profits. Users can stake these bonds and earn passive rewards based on the characteristics of the pool. Since staking doesn’t require users to relinquish ownership of their assets like trading, it’s considered a better option by many. Specifically, SMART Yield allows users to mitigate the variable yield volatility of other projects in the DeFi market.

Smart Yield users can mint tokens that represent different risk levels of an underlying protocol such as deposits on Aave or Compound. The system enables Senior token holders to receive a fixed yield while junior users benefit from the extra yield generated by senior deposits. This is the case where the variable rate of the underlying debt pool becomes higher than the weighted average guaranteed yields of current seniors.

BarnBridge Smart Exposure

Another cool feature of the market is Smart Exposure. This protocol passively rebalances any two assets in your portfolio. Investors’ can use this feature in combination with tokenized strategies to improve their ROI results.

BarnBridge Smart Alpha

The Smart Alpha feature operates as a two-sided protocol.  Barnbridge (BOND) users have the option to take either a senior or junior position on a specific ERC-20-compatible asset using this system. The system enables Juniors to pay seniors a portion of the underlying asset during times of price decline. However, they receive more of the price if the asset appreciates. Reversely, seniors receive full price protection up to a preset threshold. For this protection, they agree to fractional exposure during upswings in value.

BarnBridge Governance

The Barnbridge project is a community-run effort. The network integrates a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to provide users with voting rights and more. Users can put forth proposals on vital upgrades such as the introduction of new pools, fee structures, or new features and services.

What is the BOND token?

BOND operates as the network’s premier utility and governance token. This ERC-20 token lives on the Ethereum blockchain. The BOND token supply governs the Ethereum-based cooperative that represents BarnBridge. Users are able to stake and lock their BOND into the DAO to earn voting power for decisions made regarding the allocation of BarnBridge resources and the direction of protocol development.

Who Are the Founders of BarnBridge?

BarnBridge was co-founded by Troy Murray and Tyler Ward.

Prior to working on BarnBridge, Murray founded a crypto R&D firm RUDE_labs, exploring the benefits that blockchain can bring to the media since 2012. He has also worked as director of strategy at Breaker and as a supervisor/technical architect at snglsDAO Foundation.

Before going on to co-found BarnBridge, Ward has founded Proof Systems, a digital marketing company focused on the fintech industry. Ward has also worked with ConsenSys, Earn.com, FOAM, Dether, Grid +, Centrality, Sylo, NEAR Protocol, DARMA Capital, SingularDTV and snglsDAO.

What Makes BarnBridge Unique?

Sustainable DeFi platforms like Compound (COMP) and Aave (AAVE) provide over 5% annual percentage yield (APY) on some assets. With profitability optimizers like yEarn, APY can grow to over 10%. The drawback of these DeFi platforms is that they don’t offer fixed income; additionally, adding cryptocurrencies to a portfolio means taking on significant risks as cryptocurrency assets are highly volatile.

BarnBridge’s advantage is that it can aggregate yields with fixed income and flatten them to improve the efficiency of the system. This helps make the entry into the crypto industry more personalized and predictable for consumers, opening it up to a wider audience. From the standpoint of traditional finance, BarnBridge can be used to improve the effectiveness of stock trading.

BarnBridge creates tokenized derivatives based on market fluctuations. Examples of underlying markets include rates of return, prices, market prediction odds, default rates on mortgages and others. These derivative tokens are divided into high, medium and low risk/reward categories. BarnBridge is a cross-platform risk tokenization protocol with tranches of fixed income and volatility.

BarnBridge also supports SMART Alpha Bonds that can be used to tokenize price risks. They can expose users to large, medium, or low price fluctuations. Smart Alpha Bonds on Ethereum can be used as derivatives to hedge against any ERC-20 token price fluctuations.

BarnBridge development updates in 2023

In 2023, BarnBridge (BOND), a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, experienced several significant developments:

  • SEC Compliance and Investigation: BarnBridge made a strategic decision to comply with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations. This move came amid an SEC investigation into the platform, focusing on whether the BOND token could be classified as a security and if any laws were violated by the DeFi platform. The BarnBridge DAO (decentralized autonomous organization) advised the suspension of all activities related to BarnBridge products, including closing liquidity pools, in response to the investigation.

  • Price Movements: The BOND token exhibited considerable volatility in response to these developments. It experienced a significant slump of about 10% following the news of the SEC investigation, dropping to $3.02. However, there was also a rally where the token traded 75.51% higher at $13.36, attributed mainly to overall market movements rather than individual developments within BarnBridge.

  • Launch of BarnBridge V2: Amidst these challenges, BarnBridge announced the upcoming launch of BarnBridge V2. This new version aims to offer a sustainable fixed yield to users and is currently under audit. The launch is intended to make the DeFi platform more flexible and efficient by tokenizing market fluctuations and risk exposures.

  • Tokenized Risk Protocol: BarnBridge focuses on tokenizing risks to allow users to hedge against price volatility and yield sensitivity. The platform offers SMART Yield, SMART Exposure, and SMART Alpha products to cater to different investment needs and risk appetites. BOND, the native ERC20 standard token, is used for utility and governance within the BarnBridge network.

These developments reflect the dynamic nature of the DeFi space and BarnBridge’s efforts to navigate regulatory challenges while continuing to innovate and provide services to its users.

Best cryptocurrency wallet for BarnBridge (BOND)

There are plenty of different crypto wallets available. The best one for you depends on your general trading habits and which provides the most security in your situation. There are two main types of wallets: hot storage wallets (digital) and cold storage or hardware wallets (physical). Both have their pros and cons, and there is not necessarily a right or wrong answer when it comes to figuring out which crypto wallet is best for you.

HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH cryptocurrency WALLET TO USE for BarnBridge (BOND)?

Deciding which type of wallet to use depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • How often you trade. In general, hot wallets are better for more active cryptocurrency traders. Quick login ability means you are only a few clicks and taps away from buying and selling crypto. Cold wallets are better suited for those looking to make less frequent trades.
  • What you want to trade. As mentioned earlier, not all wallets support all types of cryptocurrencies. However, some of the best crypto wallets have the power to trade hundreds of different currencies, providing more of a one-size-fits-all experience.
  • Your peace of mind. For those worried about hacking, having a physical cold wallet stored in a safe deposit box at the bank or somewhere at home, provides the safest, most secure option. Others might be confident in their ability to keep their hot wallets secure.
  • How much it costs. It is important to investigate the costs associated with each wallet. Many hot wallets will be free to set up. Meanwhile, cold wallets, like any piece of hardware, will cost money to purchase.
  • What it can do. While the basics of each cryptocurrency wallet are the same, additional features can help set them apart. This is especially true of hot wallets, many of which come with advanced reporting features, insights into the crypto market, the ability to convert cryptocurrencies and more. Security features can also be a good differentiator.
