How to Buy Crypto in Germany (2026): EUR, SEPA and Your First Purchase

Buying cryptocurrency from Germany starts with a euro payment route, a provider allowed to serve you and a plan for the coins. This guide compares two documented routes, shows how to read the full cost and walks through buying, withdrawing and keeping German tax records.

This guide covers owning cryptocurrency, not leveraged trading or exchange-traded products. Crypto can lose its value. Some links are affiliate links; we may earn a commission. They do not determine which payment routes are included.

Choose the route that fits your starting point

EUR → Bitpanda → crypto

Bitpanda lists euro SEPA deposits and a broker-style purchase flow. This can suit someone who wants to review a quoted price before buying. Confirm the exact asset is transferable to an external wallet: being able to trade an asset does not establish which withdrawal networks are available.

EUR → Coinbase → crypto

Coinbase lists euro SEPA funding, simple purchases and Advanced order-book trading. This can suit someone who wants a choice of order interfaces. Compare the final quote and the Advanced fee tier separately; they are different products, even within the same account.

These are two documented routes, not a ranking of every provider. Payment methods, banking checks and available assets depend on your account. Confirm them before sending money.

Check the legal entity, not just the brand

ESMA’s register lists Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH under Germany’s BaFin and Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. under Luxembourg’s CSSF, with Germany included in their service countries. Match the legal entity in your account terms to the register and its permitted services. MiCA authorization is not a guarantee against losses or a safety rating for a token.

Do not treat an old registration, a familiar logo or a global website as proof of current access in Germany. A brand may operate through different entities. Check the current register and the service actually offered to your residence before funding an account.

Compare the complete cost of a €1,000 purchase

Use the same asset, wallet destination and network at roughly the same time. Compare the euros paid with the coins received after withdrawal. A low trading fee can be outweighed by the quoted price, payment charges or a fixed withdrawal cost.

Turn a percentage into euros

For illustration, a 1% trading charge on €1,000 is €10. If withdrawal then costs €5, the explicit charges total €15 before any spread or funding charge. This is a calculation exercise, not either provider’s current tariff. Review the actual quote, including how the fee is charged and the net coins received.

A quote needs a full breakdown

Coinbase simple purchases include a quoted spread and a fee shown before confirmation. Advanced uses an order book and a separate fee structure. Bitpanda publishes product-specific cost information. A broker quote and an order-book fee are not directly comparable without the execution price and withdrawal cost.

Try the full-route comparison

Imagine two routes for the same asset and network. Route A has no funding charge, €10 trading costs and a €5 withdrawal. Route B has a €4 funding charge, €3 trading costs and a €6 withdrawal. Assume equal execution prices and no other charges. Which is cheaper?

A totals €15; B totals €13. B is €2 cheaper under these assumptions, despite charging for funding. These are teaching figures, not live offers. Different spreads, purchase sizes or withdrawal networks can reverse the result.

From account setup to coins in your wallet

Verify access and secure the account

Open the provider’s official site, confirm German-resident eligibility and complete its identity checks. Use a unique password and strong two-factor authentication. Keep account-recovery details secure. A request to install remote-access software or send crypto to unlock your account is a reason to stop and verify independently.

Fund the right balance

Choose EUR and SEPA in the account’s deposit screen. Copy the current beneficiary, IBAN and reference exactly; use a bank account in your own name. Coinbase states that SEPA can take 1–3 working days. A transfer being accepted by your bank does not mean the exchange balance is already available to trade.

Review the asset and order

Confirm the exact coin, purchase amount, quoted price and fees before accepting. A market order prioritizes execution; a limit order sets a price boundary but may not fill. Avoid confusing spot ownership with futures, leveraged tokens or a similarly named asset.

Check the destination before withdrawing

Match the asset, network and receiving address with your wallet’s instructions, including a memo or tag if required. Inspect the withdrawal minimum, fee and net amount. Consider a small test transfer where practical. Never give an exchange or support agent your wallet’s recovery phrase.

Keep a euro record of every acquisition and disposal

For ordinary privately held cryptocurrency in Germany, selling within one year can create taxable private-disposal income. Swapping one coin for another or spending crypto can also be a disposal. Gains after holding for more than one year are generally tax-free for private holdings. Business assets, staking income and other special situations need separate assessment.

  • Acquisition and disposal dates, coin quantities and euro values
  • Fees, order confirmations and the basis for each euro valuation
  • Wallet addresses, transaction IDs and records linking transfers between your own wallets

The €1,000 annual threshold under §23 EStG is a Freigrenze, not a deduction. If total relevant private-disposal gains are €900, they are below it. At €1,100, the entire €1,100 is potentially taxable, not just €100. It applies to the relevant annual total, not each coin or platform. These figures are gains, not sales proceeds.

Questions before your first purchase

Can I buy crypto in Germany using a bank transfer?

Yes. Providers such as Bitpanda and Coinbase list euro SEPA deposits. Check your account’s current instructions, minimums and availability. A bank transfer funds the account; you still need to review and place the crypto purchase. A foreign IBAN alone does not establish whether a provider is legitimate.

Do I need my own wallet immediately?

You can use a provider’s custody service where offered, but then depend on its access controls and withdrawals. A self-custody wallet gives you responsibility for backups and transaction accuracy. Learn the process before moving funds; self-custody does not remove every risk.

Does moving crypto to my own wallet restart the holding period?

A transfer between wallets you own is generally not a sale, so the acquisition history should remain linked to the coins. Keep evidence connecting both wallets. Exchanging the asset for another token is different and can constitute a disposal; do not record a swap as a simple transfer.

Choose your next practical step

Use the local payment and eligibility checks above first. Then go deeper into the platform, asset or skill relevant to your purchase.

A little groundwork goes a long way

Before your next purchase or transfer, understand who controls access, where your crypto is going and what the trade will actually cost.

Protect access to your crypto

An exchange account and a self-custody wallet need different safeguards. Protect exchange logins with a unique password and strong two-factor authentication. For self-custody, your recovery backup is what lets you restore access.

Keep recovery words offline and private. A support agent or website asking for them is a reason to stop.

See a recovery example

Your phone breaks. An exchange may help you recover your account after identity checks. A self-custody wallet cannot reset your recovery phrase. Check your wallet’s official backup instructions before relying on it.

Choose the right transfer network

The asset, token version and network must be supported at the destination. A familiar ticker or a matching address format is not enough. Read the receiving platform’s deposit instructions before selecting a withdrawal network.

Check the address, any required memo or tag, fees and minimums. Consider a small test transfer first.

See a network example

Your destination accepts USDC on Ethereum. Selecting a cheaper network at the sending exchange does not make it an Ethereum transfer. Use a network both ends support; an ordinary withdrawal does not bridge tokens.

Understand the price you pay

Trading fees are only part of the cost. The spread, available liquidity and withdrawal charges also matter. A market order prioritizes execution; a limit order controls the price but may remain unfilled or fill only partly.

Check the order preview and the amount you will receive, then compare the full cost of your intended purchase and withdrawal.

Work through a cost example

Hypothetical example: a $200 trade with a 0.1% trading fee costs $0.20 in trading fees. A separate $5 withdrawal fee brings those charges to $5.20. Spread or slippage may add more; these are not quoted exchange rates.
