How to Buy Crypto in Spain (2026): EUR, SEPA and Fees
Buying crypto in Spain starts with a euro payment route, a provider you can verify and a clear record of what you buy. Follow the steps from bank transfer to wallet, compare the complete cost and learn why a crypto swap can matter for your Spanish tax return even when no euros reach your bank.

This guide covers owning cryptocurrency, not leveraged trading or exchange-traded products. Crypto can lose its value. Some links are affiliate links; we may earn a commission. They do not determine which payment routes are included.
Choose the route that fits your starting point
EUR → Bitvavo → crypto
Bitvavo lists Spain among its supported countries and directs Spanish customers to bitvavo.es, which currently opens its Spanish site. You can fund a euro balance by SEPA and then choose a spot order. Start from that official route and check the account terms, rather than assuming every feature advertised in another country is available to you.
EUR → Coinbase → crypto
Coinbase lists euro SEPA funding, simple purchases and Advanced order-book trading. This can suit someone who wants a choice of order interfaces. Compare the final quote and the Advanced fee tier separately; they are different products, even within the same account.
These are two documented routes, not a ranking of every provider. Payment methods, banking checks and available assets depend on your account. Confirm them before sending money.
Check the legal entity, not just the brand
Check the exact contracting entity in the CNMV and ESMA registers. Bitvavo B.V. is authorized by the Dutch AFM; Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. by Luxembourg’s CSSF, with Spain in their service-country records. Coinbase’s published Spanish transition to that entity took effect on 13 October 2025. Authorization does not insure crypto balances or guarantee a coin’s value.
A historic Banco de España registration is not the same as current MiCA authorization. Match the entity, website and permitted services, not just a familiar brand. A Spanish-language interface alone proves neither Spanish establishment nor your eligibility. Check staking, lending and leveraged products separately.
Compare the complete cost of a €1,000 purchase
Use the same asset, wallet destination and network at roughly the same time. Compare the euros paid with the coins received after withdrawal. A low trading fee can be outweighed by the quoted price, payment charges or a fixed withdrawal cost.
Turn a percentage into euros
At the checked date, Bitvavo’s entry EUR-market tier lists 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker fees. A €1,000 executed taker trade therefore costs €2.50 in trading fees, before price effects or a crypto withdrawal. Stablecoin and other market categories have separate schedules. Check your pair, tier and order preview.
A quote needs a full breakdown
Bitvavo’s published tariff lists free SEPA funding, with separate trading and crypto-withdrawal costs. Coinbase simple purchases include a spread and fee; Advanced has a separate order-book tariff. A card or app payment may be convenient, but compare its preview against the bank-transfer route using the same asset and amount.
Try the full-route comparison
Imagine two routes for the same asset and network. Route A has no funding charge, €10 trading costs and a €5 withdrawal. Route B has a €4 funding charge, €3 trading costs and a €6 withdrawal. Assume equal execution prices and no other charges. Which is cheaper?
A totals €15; B totals €13. B is €2 cheaper under these assumptions, despite charging for funding. These are teaching figures, not live offers. Different spreads, purchase sizes or withdrawal networks can reverse the result.
From account setup to coins in your wallet
Verify access and secure the account
Use the official provider site and select Spain as your actual country of residence. Complete the identity and eligibility checks; the account’s requirements determine which documents are accepted. Use a unique password and strong two-factor authentication. Never install remote-access software or send crypto because someone claims this will unlock the account.
Fund the right balance
Choose a EUR deposit. Copy the current beneficiary, IBAN and payment reference from your own account into your bank’s transfer form. Coinbase requires matching account names, only its reference code in the reference field and allows 1–3 business days for SEPA. Do not substitute a friend’s account or assume Bizum is supported: use only the methods offered to your verified account. Wait until the euro balance is credited.
Review the asset and order
Confirm the exact coin, purchase amount, quoted price and fees before accepting. A market order prioritizes execution; a limit order sets a price boundary but may not fill. Avoid confusing spot ownership with futures, leveraged tokens or a similarly named asset.
Check the destination before withdrawing
Match the asset, network and receiving address with your wallet’s instructions, including a memo or tag if required. Inspect the withdrawal minimum, fee and net amount. Consider a small test transfer where practical. Never give an exchange or support agent your wallet’s recovery phrase.
Build a Spanish tax record from the first purchase
Under Spain’s ordinary personal-income-tax rules, selling crypto for euros and swapping one cryptocurrency for another can produce a capital gain or loss. Waiting to withdraw euros does not postpone a swap’s tax event. Identify disposals using FIFO: the earliest units bought of the same currency are treated as sold first. Keep that history across exchanges and wallets, rather than restarting the acquisition cost whenever you move coins.
- Date, units, euro purchase cost, disposal value and directly related fees for every transaction
- Both sides of a crypto swap and their euro market values; exports and transaction IDs linking transfers between your own wallets
- Custodian’s legal entity and country, account details and 31 December balances for any foreign-asset reporting check
Sale: 0.015 BTC for €900 → €700 cost → €200 gain
FIFO practice, ignoring fees: buy 0.01 BTC for €400, then 0.01 BTC for €600. Later sell 0.015 BTC for €900. Allocate the first €400 lot plus half of the second lot (€300): total cost €700 and gain €200. The remaining 0.005 BTC retains €300 of cost. For a crypto swap, Spain’s valuation rule uses the higher market value of the assets given or received; it is not automatically tax-free.
Questions before your first purchase
Is a Spanish website or an old registration enough?
No. Use the current CNMV and ESMA registers and compare them with the company named in your account agreement. Then check that your payment method and the desired asset are actually supported. A translated interface, Spanish phone number or old Banco de España listing does not replace these checks.
Do I need my own wallet immediately?
You can use a provider’s custody service where offered, but then depend on its access controls and withdrawals. A self-custody wallet gives you responsibility for backups and transaction accuracy. Learn the process before moving funds; self-custody does not remove every risk.
When should I check Modelo 721?
Check it when crypto is held by a foreign custodian. The first-filing threshold generally concerns combined year-end balances above €50,000, not profit or each coin separately. The normal filing window is January–March of the following year. Later filings have separate €20,000 increase and cessation rules. A wallet whose keys you control yourself is outside this custody-based report, but gains can still be taxable. Modelo 721 does not replace the income-tax return; Basque Country and Navarre rules may differ.
Choose your next practical step
Use the local payment and eligibility checks above first. Then go deeper into the platform, asset or skill relevant to your purchase.
