How to Buy Crypto in Portugal (2026): EUR, SEPA and Fees

Buying crypto in Portugal starts with a euro payment, but the details matter: which company holds your account, what arrives after fees and which records prove when you bought. Follow a SEPA purchase through to your wallet, then work through Portugal’s 365-day rule with a practical example.

This guide covers owning cryptocurrency, not leveraged trading or exchange-traded products. Crypto can lose its value. Some links are affiliate links; we may earn a commission. They do not determine which payment routes are included.

Choose the route that fits your starting point

EUR → Bitvavo → crypto

Bitvavo lists Portugal among its supported countries and accepts euro SEPA deposits. After funding, choose the coin’s actual EUR spot market and review the order. An interface in another language does not change your residence or eligibility. Check the payment options shown in your verified account.

EUR → Coinbase → crypto

Coinbase lists euro SEPA funding, simple purchases and Advanced order-book trading. This can suit someone who wants a choice of order interfaces. Compare the final quote and the Advanced fee tier separately; they are different products, even within the same account.

These are two documented routes, not a ranking of every provider. Payment methods, banking checks and available assets depend on your account. Confirm them before sending money.

Check the legal entity, not just the brand

Match the company in your agreement to ESMA’s MiCA register and the Portuguese CMVM’s provider information. Bitvavo B.V. is authorized by the Dutch AFM; Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. by Luxembourg’s CSSF. Their service coverage includes Portugal. Coinbase moved Portuguese customers to its Luxembourg entity on 22 September 2025. Authorization does not guarantee token values or insure crypto balances.

A historic anti-money-laundering registration, a Portuguese website or a familiar brand is not enough. Verify the exact legal entity, website and permitted services. An EU-authorized provider can serve Portugal through passporting; the licence need not have been issued in Portugal.

Compare the complete cost of a €1,000 purchase

Use the same asset, wallet destination and network at roughly the same time. Compare the euros paid with the coins received after withdrawal. A low trading fee can be outweighed by the quoted price, payment charges or a fixed withdrawal cost.

Turn a percentage into euros

At the checked date, Bitvavo’s entry EUR-market tier lists 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker fees. A €1,000 executed taker trade therefore costs €2.50 in trading fees, before price effects or a crypto withdrawal. Stablecoin and other market categories have separate schedules. Check your pair, tier and order preview.

A quote needs a full breakdown

Bitvavo lists free SEPA deposits; trading and crypto withdrawals are separate. Coinbase simple purchases include a spread and fee, while Advanced uses a separate order-book tariff. Compare the same asset and amount, including any bank, card or payment-app charge, before choosing the payment route.

Try the full-route comparison

Imagine two routes for the same asset and network. Route A has no funding charge, €10 trading costs and a €5 withdrawal. Route B has a €4 funding charge, €3 trading costs and a €6 withdrawal. Assume equal execution prices and no other charges. Which is cheaper?

A totals €15; B totals €13. B is €2 cheaper under these assumptions, despite charging for funding. These are teaching figures, not live offers. Different spreads, purchase sizes or withdrawal networks can reverse the result.

Verify access and secure the account

Enter Portugal only if it is your actual country of residence. Complete the provider’s identity and eligibility checks and supply accurate tax details when requested. Use a unique password and strong two-factor authentication. Never grant remote access or pay a supposed recovery agent to unlock funds.

Fund the right balance

Open the EUR deposit instructions and copy the beneficiary, IBAN and reference into your bank’s transfer screen. Coinbase requires matching account names and only its reference code in the reference field; SEPA can take 1–3 business days. Do not assume MB WAY or Multibanco is supported just because you bank in Portugal. Use only a method offered inside your verified account.

Review the asset and order

Confirm the exact coin, purchase amount, quoted price and fees before accepting. A market order prioritizes execution; a limit order sets a price boundary but may not fill. Avoid confusing spot ownership with futures, leveraged tokens or a similarly named asset.

Check the destination before withdrawing

Match the asset, network and receiving address with your wallet’s instructions, including a memo or tag if required. Inspect the withdrawal minimum, fee and net amount. Consider a small test transfer where practical. Never give an exchange or support agent your wallet’s recovery phrase.

Understand the 365-day rule before you sell

For Portuguese tax residents investing privately, gains on crypto that is not a security generally fall under Category G. The positive taxable annual balance normally faces 28%, with an option to aggregate it with other income. Gains and losses on qualifying holdings of at least 365 days are excluded. Jurisdiction conditions apply, so holding for a year is not a universal exemption. Business activity, mining and rewards need separate analysis.

  • Dates, quantities, euro purchase costs, sale proceeds and fees; retain exports from every exchange
  • The original acquisition history through wallet transfers and crypto-to-crypto swaps, including transaction IDs and counterparties where known
  • Provider country, tax residence and evidence supporting the holding period; check the applicable FIFO rules when combining purchases
Documented purchase cost€1,000
Proceeds from selling the whole position€2,000

€1,000 gain: the holding period changes the tax treatment

Illustration: buy one Bitcoin position for €1,000 and sell it all for €2,000 after 180 days. The €1,000 gain gives €280 at 28%, ignoring fees, other gains or losses and aggregation. After 400 days, the gain may instead be excluded if the legal conditions are met. This compares tax treatment, not investment outcomes: the future sale price can fall. Keep evidence of the dates; moving coins between your wallets does not by itself create a new purchase.

Questions before your first purchase

Can I use MB WAY or Multibanco to buy crypto?

Check the funding screen for your verified account. This guide documents SEPA routes; it does not establish support for MB WAY or Multibanco. A Portuguese bank account or a local-language advert is not proof that an exchange accepts them. Never pay a beneficiary supplied only through social media or an unsolicited message.

Do I need my own wallet immediately?

You can use a provider’s custody service where offered, but then depend on its access controls and withdrawals. A self-custody wallet gives you responsibility for backups and transaction accuracy. Learn the process before moving funds; self-custody does not remove every risk.

Does an excluded gain mean nothing needs declaring?

No. The tax authority’s Anexo G1 instructions include disposals of qualifying crypto held for at least 365 days. Taxable and foreign-source transactions may require different annexes. A qualifying crypto-to-crypto swap can defer taxation while carrying forward the acquisition value; preserve its history. Leaving Portuguese tax residence can also trigger a deemed disposal. Check the correct year’s forms and your circumstances before filing.

Choose your next practical step

Use the local payment and eligibility checks above first. Then go deeper into the platform, asset or skill relevant to your purchase.

A little groundwork goes a long way

Before your next purchase or transfer, understand who controls access, where your crypto is going and what the trade will actually cost.

Protect access to your crypto

An exchange account and a self-custody wallet need different safeguards. Protect exchange logins with a unique password and strong two-factor authentication. For self-custody, your recovery backup is what lets you restore access.

Keep recovery words offline and private. A support agent or website asking for them is a reason to stop.

See a recovery example

Your phone breaks. An exchange may help you recover your account after identity checks. A self-custody wallet cannot reset your recovery phrase. Check your wallet’s official backup instructions before relying on it.

Choose the right transfer network

The asset, token version and network must be supported at the destination. A familiar ticker or a matching address format is not enough. Read the receiving platform’s deposit instructions before selecting a withdrawal network.

Check the address, any required memo or tag, fees and minimums. Consider a small test transfer first.

See a network example

Your destination accepts USDC on Ethereum. Selecting a cheaper network at the sending exchange does not make it an Ethereum transfer. Use a network both ends support; an ordinary withdrawal does not bridge tokens.

Understand the price you pay

Trading fees are only part of the cost. The spread, available liquidity and withdrawal charges also matter. A market order prioritizes execution; a limit order controls the price but may remain unfilled or fill only partly.

Check the order preview and the amount you will receive, then compare the full cost of your intended purchase and withdrawal.

Work through a cost example

Hypothetical example: a $200 trade with a 0.1% trading fee costs $0.20 in trading fees. A separate $5 withdrawal fee brings those charges to $5.20. Spread or slippage may add more; these are not quoted exchange rates.
